Although several states and cities have been incrementally increasing the minimum wage, a few large companies, including Amazon and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, have recently announced their own minimum wages that are well beyond their state’s minimum wage. This will likely result in wage compression issues, as current employees in the same or similar roles will be either at or below these new minimum wages. Such changes will impact the current salary ranges, as positions throughout the job families will need to be re-evaluated and aligned appropriately to ensure a balance of the internal hierarchy.
