Claire Foy of Netflix’s “The Crown” is receiving back pay to correct the pay gap with her male co-star, following strong public outcry.  While women and protected classes have been covered by equal pay rules for many years, today’s social media environment makes it very easy to share information and create advocacy for issues relating to fair pay, supported by the National Labor Relations Act, Paycheck Fairness Act, and Obama’s Executive Order on Non-Retaliation for Disclosure of Compensation Information, along with states strengthening their own equal pay rules.

Today’s transparent social media environment, while often criticized, may show a more positive side for pursuing change for the common good, just as during the 1960s, when Americans spoke out about many issues, including discrimination and resulting in changes that are evidenced in the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
