"The (Christmas) turkey is going by the boards," said Paul Dorf, managing director of Compensation Resources Inc., in Upper Saddle River. The problem: If employees come to expect a bonus "come Hell or high water and no matter how hard they work" it doesn't provide much motivation, he said. "A bonus is not motivating much before and certainly not after it has been received and spent," said Dorf, the compensation expert whose consulting firm advises many mid-sizes companies on compensation issues. "With incentive plans, it's kind of like holding the carrot out for a longer period of time."
